The resolution, drafted by the Talladega County Economic Development Authority, recommended the commission authorize funds from a 2-cent rural sales tax designated for rural water development to the Talladega County Water Department for extending water lines at Shady and Smithville lanes and installing fire hydrants on Smithville Lane and Cove Shocco Road.
District 3 Commissioner Kelvin Cunningham said the resolution was made possible by residents and local leaders voicing their concerns to Alabama legislators and that Rep. Barbara Boyd, R-Anniston, played an instrumental role in garnering support for the resolution.
According to the resolution, more than 20 households will reap the benefits of these new water projects.
Cunningham estimated the projects at Cove Shocco Road and Smithville Lane would be completed within two to three weeks. There is currently no timetable set for the project at Shady Lane.
Installing the fire hydrant at Cove Shocco Road will cost approximately $3,300.
The $33,000 project at Shady Lane involves adding 5,600 feet of 3-inch waterline.
An estimated $26,224 from the funds will be spent at Smithville Lane, where workers will add 2,556 feet of 3-inch waterline and the fire hydrant will be installed near where Smithville Lane meets Howell Cove Road.
“Fire hydrants cannot tap into the waterlines unless the line is at least 6 inches,” Cunningham said. “The fire hydrant on Smithville Lane will tap into the 6 inch lines on Howell Cove Road.”
Curtis McGhee, a Talladega resident who has lived on Smithville Lane since 1996, seemed thrilled at the prospect of receiving metered water in the near future.
“We need it up here,” McGhee said. “There are six houses up here on wells. Not a lot of people can afford the $800 to tap into the waterlines. The bottom line is we all need potable water to drink.
“That’s wonderful (the resolution was passed),” he added. “I know we appreciate it. I’ve talked to a lot of people about trying to get water. It would help everyone on Smithville Lane.”
