FAYETTEVILLE— While both Fayetteville and TC Central will advance to Troy for the regional section of the softball season, the Fayetteville Lady Wolves also earned the additional honor of being crowned the Class 1A Area 7 champions by defeating TC Central 16-1 in the championship game.

“It’s been a long time,” Fayetteville head coach Chris Sherbert said. “I don’t know how long it’s been, but I know it’s been at least four year, ever since I’ve been here since Fayetteville’s been able to be an area champion. Any time you can put champion beside your name, you’ve got to be excited about it for your girls. They deserve it.”

Both teams were scoreless after an inning of play. TC Central actually got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the second inning.

Fayetteville didn’t waste any time coming back to regain the lead, and a commanding lead at that.

Two walks and a single up the middle by Brittany Snyder loaded the bases. Kayla Sherbert took a walk to bring in the first run. TC Central replaced starting pitcher Kayla Bell with Nyah Garrett, but she also struggled with control issues. Summer Guy came in to score from third base on a wild pitch.

Courtney Deloach was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, and Katelyn Bierley followed that with a walk to make it 3-1.

Another run came in to score on a passed ball. Garrett struck out two of the next three batters, but walked one and two runs came in to score on wild pitches to make it 6-1 heading into the third inning.

Fayetteville put together a similarly productive bottom of the third inning. Brittany Snyder scored on a passed ball. Lauren Guy also scored on a passed ball after Deloach took a walk. Erica Dennis took a walk and two more runs scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-1.

Fayetteville continued to score runs on wild pitches and passed balls until it was 12-1 by the end of the inning.

Fayetteville’s starting pitcher Haydn Hughes ended up going three innings strong before being lifted for Lauren Guy. Guy pitched one inning allowing no hits and striking out two batters.

Fayetteville added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and the game was called according to AHSAA rules.

To start the tournament, TC Central defeated Winterboro 17-6. In the second game, Fayetteville beat TC Central 12-2. In the third game, TC beat Winterboro again to reach the championship with a final score of 17-11.

Both Fayetteville and TC Central will play in the regionals May 10 and 11 in Troy. Opponents and game times are still to be determined.

“We played TC and Winterboro during the season and I tell you what, both TC and Winterboro have improved tremendously from the first time we played them until today,” Sherbert said. “We didn’t get a chance to play Winterboro, but I know they played TC tight. TC gave us some problems early in the game. Hats off to both Winterboro’s and TC’s head coach.”
