The Talladega County Board of Education approved Alan Beckett to be the next head football coach of the Winterboro Bulldogs on April 1. Beckett met with his new team on Monday afternoon.

Beckett, who has ties to Talladega County, originally turned down Winterboro the first time he was offered the job. According to an interview he gave The Cherokee County Herald, Winterboro made him an offer that he couldn’t turn down.

“It was a very hard decision. I agonized over it for quite a while,” Beckett said. “I just thought it was a good situation. He (Winterboro principal Craig Bates) made it tough to turn down.

“What is special about the situation is that’s where my dad (Bobby Beckett) went to school, and we’ve got about 90 acres of family land and a home down there. My grandfather passed away several years ago and nobody’s been in that home. The pay was a good bit better, and with me becoming an AD (athletics director), I thought they made a pretty good offer.”

Beckett has shown that he can turn a struggling program into a winner. Before taking over in 2007, Collinsville missed the playoffs for six straight seasons. Beckett led the Panthers to four-playoff appearance in five seasons.

He posted a 43-23 record, including back-to-back region championships in 2010 and 2011. His best season was in 2011, when Collinsville went 11-2 and reached the Class 1A state quarterfinals. He led the Panthers to an 8-2 record in the regular season and they lost in the first round of the AHSAA playoffs to R.A. Hubbard.

For Winterboro, this is their third coach in as many seasons. Last season, David Nurnberg led Winterboro to a 3-8 record and a playoff berth.

The Daily Home attempted to contact Winterboro principal Craig Bates and Alan Beckett. Neither Bates nor Beckett returned The Daily Home’s call at time of press.
