CHILDERSBURG — With the annual Chamber Banquet scheduled for Feb. 16, the Chamber of Commerce is now receiving nominations for the Chamber’s “Hall of Fame.” This year’s selection will be the 28th individual chosen for the award.

The Chamber began its annual recognition in 1989 when five individuals were selected for the award. Honored in 1989 were Jimmie Moody, Coach John W. Cox, Robert M. Cleckler Sr., educator and principal A.H. Watwood, and Leona McCullum. Their pictures and the pictures of other recipients line the halls of the Chamber.

Individuals are nominated by members of the community and qualifications for consideration include being a present or former resident of Childersburg, living or dead, and are determined to have made a significant contribution to the community. The nominations are reviewed by Chamber members.

“It is the only award that membership decides,” Chamber President and CEO Pete Storey said.

Through the years, recipients of the award have included two fathers and their sons, and one pair of brothers.

Robert Cleckler Sr. was selected in 1989 and in 2011 Robert “Bubba” Cleckler Jr. received the award. Cleckler Sr. started the First State Bank of Childersburg in 1949, later known as First National Bank and then First Bank of Childersburg. Cleckler Jr., worked at the bank from 1963 to1997. Cleckler Jr. now volunteers at the Chamber and is an officer of the Chamber.

In 2004, Dr. M. D. Moody was recognized and son Mort, a CPA with 25 plus years as a Chamber Board member, received the award in 2012. M.D. Moody was a Childersburg native and served the community as a general practitioner for 38 years.

Former Chamber volunteer Executive Director George Limbaugh was selected in 1990 and brother Robert Limbaugh, former Childersburg mayor (1964-1980) and owner of Limbaugh Hardware was recognized in 1997.

Individuals wanting to nominate someone to be recognized at this year’s Hall of Fame recognition can obtain nominating forms at the Chamber office or download an application from the Chamber’s website.

Nomination forms should include reasons why the nominee should be considered and include a brief biographical sketch of 100 words or less. Submissions should also include a $10 fee to help defray the costs of the nomination process.

The next member of the Hall of Fame will be announced at the Chamber’s annual banquet Feb. 16. At that time, the Chamber will also announce the New Business of the Year award for businesses established for five years or less, the Established Business of the Year for businesses established for six years or more, and the Industry of the Year. These awards are determined by Chamber board members.

Also recognized at the banquet will be the Childersburg Police Officer of the Year.
