This is TC Central’s first win over Munford in three tries this season.
“The third time was a charm,” TC Central head coach Damien Dorsey said. “This is the third time playing this team, so we were finally able to get a win. It was a big win for us. It keeps the momentum going and it helps with our confidence. We were finally able to get something done against a big school.”
Munford trailed 44-38 going into the fourth quarter. The duo of Tweety Richardson and Monteo Garrett led the Lions back into the game in the fourth quarter.
Richardson scored four quick points to cut the lead down to 48-44. Garrett nailed a 3-pointer with 3:26 left in the game to cut the lead down to 48-47. The junior shooting guard split a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 48-48 with 2:54 left in the game.
Richardson drained a pair of free throws to take a 50-48 lead with 2:40 left in the game.
Tyler Cross hit a layup to tie the game up at 50-50 with 1:59 left in the game.
Garrett responded with a layup to give the Lions a 52-50 lead with 1:38 left in the game.
Crystale Stockdale drained a 3-pointer from the right wing to give TC Central a 53-52 lead with 1:25 left in the game. On the Fighting Tigers next trip down the court, Stockdale was able to drive past a Munford defender for a layup to increase their lead to 55-52.
Garrett, Richardson and Jaylen Mitchell missed 3-pointers that could have tied up the game.
Dewayne Wallace drained a pair of free throws to increase TC Central’s lead to 57-52 with nine seconds remaining in the game. Garrett cut the lead down to 57-54.
“They played us close the first two times,” Munford head coach Isaiah Gaddis said. “They are coming together now and making shots. We missed way to many layups and we just didn’t play well.”
Munford jumped out to a 5-2 lead into the first quarter. TC Central ended the quarter on an 8-4 run to take a 10-9 lead into the second quarter.
Mitchell scored seven points in the second quarter to help Munford take a 26-23 lead into halftime. Garrett hit a runner off the assist from Mitchell to give the Lions a 26-21 lead with: 38 seconds left in the half.
Russell’s putback with: 22 seconds left in the half cut Munford’s lead to 26-23 going into intermission.
Even though the Fighting Tigers pulled out a win, Dorsey wasn’t pleased with his team’s ability to get the ball into their post players.
“We still not getting the ball inside,” Dorsey said.” We have an advantage with pretty much everybody that we play and we not taking advantage of it.”
Stockdale led the way for TC Central with 12 points. Russell chipped in with nine points.
Garrett led Munford with 16 points, while backcourt mate Richardson scored 15 points. Mitchell chipped in with eight points.
The Fighting Tigers take on archrival Winterboro tonight at 6 p.m.
The Lions take on Talladega at 7:30 p.m.
