St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell identified the victim as James C. Brittian, 74, of Pell City.
Russell said it appears that Brittian’s vehicle either ran out of gas or had mechanical problems. He said the vehicle was parked on the edge of the road, close to where Brittian was struck by three to four vehicles.
“They (drivers) all stopped,” he said.
Russell said the victim’s vehicle was parked along the shoulder of the northbound lane of U.S. 231, but the victim was apparently struck as he was standing on the southbound lane of the highway.
He said Brittian was pronounced dead at the scene, near the intersection of Savage Town Road and U.S. 231 North, at 5:57 a.m. Saturday.
