But the Lions weren’t quite finished. They took control of the game in the fourth quarter, scoring four touchdowns to the visitors’ one to put the game into overtime.
But that’s as good as it got for Munford coach Will Wagnon’s team. Alexandria’s Zachary Carrizales intercepted Munford’s pass on the first play in overtime, and the Valley Cubs’ Alton Davis scored on a one-yard run on their third play to win the game 41-35.
Wagnon said, “I’m proud they didn’t quit, but we need to get to the point where we stop being ‘not-quitters’ and start being winners.”
Munford started the game well, forcing an Alexandria punt on the game’s first possession, then scoring in just four plays for a 7-0 lead.
But Alexandria bounced back with three unanswered touchdowns before the half, capitalizing on Munford miscues.
Munford’s first touchdown came on a 41-run by Tayvon Lawson, with Brian Strickland kicking the first of his five PATs from Lawson’s hold in the game.
The Valley Cubs’ first half scores came on a 20-yard run by Justice Owens and passes from Tanner Wells to Owens for 27 and 36 yards.
Munford took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove down to the one-foot line but failed to score. But Alexandria’s Owens broke loose on a 67-yard sprint to score again for a 28-7 lead in a ho-hum ball game.
But the fourth quarter got interesting.
Munford had made gotten a drive going at the end of the third quarter, and on the first play of the fourth, Tweety Richardson found an open lane on the left sideline, and ran 31 yards for the score.
The Lion defense then stopped Alexandria on a fourth-and-two-inches play to regain possession. Munford quarterback Monteo Garrett passed to Chris Chapman on a 44-yard play to score again to trail by just one touchdown, 28-21.
Alexandria came back with a 65-yard run down the left sideline to go ahead by two touchdowns.
So Munford scored two more times.
The next time was on a 49-yard pass play from Garrett to Dustin Haynes, and with 1:24 left in regulation play, Garrett took it up the middle from the one-yard line to tie the game.
The Lions had the ball first in overtime, but gave up their only turnover of the game on the first down interception. Alexandria’s TD on the next possession ended the game.
On the difference in Munford’s level of play in the first and second halves, Wagnon said the coaches really didn’t change anything.
“We just told them we could only put them in position, but it was up to them to make the plays. And they came out and started making plays. But Alexandria made one more play than we did.”
Owens rushed for 215 yards for Alexandria. Garrett rushed for 95 yards for Munford and passed for 169 yards.
The win gives Alexandria a 3-3(3-1) record on the season and leaves Munford at 3-3 (2-2). Munford hosts Hokes Bluff next Friday in another Region game. Alexandria travels to Cleburne County.
