SYLACAUGA – Mayor Sam Wright is remembered by many as a man who cared about his city and the people who lived there.

“I think Sam was one of the most fair and caring person’s I know,” former business associate and friend Steve Sprayberry said.

The two men went into business in 1983 and worked together until Wright became Sylacauga’s mayor in 2004, serving two consecutive terms.

“Sam was the type person we could all learn from by the way he cared about and treated people,” Sprayberry said.

He said people thought Wright was born and raised in Sylacauga.

“He was such a great ambassador for the city,” Sprayberry said. “People naturally thought he was from here.”

The 73-year-old mayor was actually born in Fayette, Ala., and grew up in Ashville.
