Summertime yum at Pursell Farms
by Laura Nation-Atchison
It’s a dream come true for tomato lovers.

With five tasting “stations” and the beautiful outdoor venue of Pursell Farms in south Talladega County, the first ever TomatoTaste is on for Saturday, July 27 starting at 5 p.m. and continuing until 8 p.m.

There will be more than 30 varieties of tomatoes-grown in the Pursell gardens- to be had and the stations include everything from building you own bloody mary from three types of mix, and fillers like fresh picked pickled green beans and okra to asparagus and much more.

Then there’s the station offering all the varieties of garden fresh tomatoes to top with home made mozzarella, garden basil and an assortment of salads.

Then there’s the barbecue pit where you’ll find piles of roasted pulled pork and beer can chicken served with Pursell’s own homemade tomato barbecue sauce with delicious mini rolls and a set of “sides” you’ll have to dig into.

Station four is a soup and sandwich station serving mini tomato sandwiches, both hot and cold, fresh braised bacon, lettuce and thick sliced tomatoes and chunks of lettuce with tomato gazpacho and tomato bisque.

The final station will serve fried green tomato poppers and green tomato sandwiches, green tomato relish served on crustini and tomato bread.

But that’s not all.

There will be tomato jam and bacon, there, too, along with some sweet treats to finish off the tasting experience.

The fare for the evening will be overseen by Executive Chef Andrea Griffith, who has earned 11 American Culinary Federation accredited medals including ice carving, cold food salon and hot food.

“We are taking fresh farm to fork dining and making I into a culinary experience with this event by highlighting the exquisite dishes Chef Andrea can prepare,” said David Pursell, Pursell Farms co-founder and CEO. “We are looking forward to a great time at the farm with live music, summer games and great food.”

The price per person for the TomatoTaste is $49 and mixed drinks are not included.

Those who wish to attend can make reservations by calling Beth Bagley at 256-208-2051 or email
