PELL CITY – An officer from the Pell City Police Department shot a man during an altercation Friday night near 30th Street and 4th Avenue North.

According to Public Information Officer Sgt. Don Newton, the officer was forced to use his handgun to defend himself after the male started to assault him.

The names of the individuals involved and specific details of the altercation are being withheld because of an on-going investigation by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, a measure Newton called “standard protocol” for an incident of this nature.

Emergency responders transported the man to University Hospital in Birmingham. Newton did not disclose the nature of the individual’s injuries.
