ARCA legend enjoys more than just racing at Dega
TALLADEGA- Frank Kimmel loves coming to Talladega, but not for the reason you may think. Kimmel will start 11th in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame 250 at Talladega on Friday.

“It is always great to come back here and really has nothing to do with the race track,” Kimmel said. “I think it is all the people around the race track. I love the way the fans, the officials and everybody at the Talladega Superspeedway treats us. Without a doubt it is one of the coolest places to come out to.”

Kimmel only has one win at Talladega, but he has several strong finishes. He said racing at Talladega is all about being at the right place at the right time.

“We’ve had a lot of good luck here over the years,” Kimmel said. “We don’t have a tremendous amount of wins here, we’ve only won once here, but it has been a good place for us. I do enjoy racing around the race track. It is so smooth now and they have made it so much nicer. It is a restrictor plate race, so there is a lot more intensity and chess playing. It is a big chess match to get your self in the right spot at the right time at the end of the day. I think are going to be OK doing that at the end of the day.”

Even though Kimmel enjoys racing at restrictor plate tracks such as Talladega, he is more of a fan of short tracks.

“I am a fan of the short tracks, but that is where we come from,” Kimmel said. “This track is really about equipment. If your race cars are fast, you will run fast. Then, it is just a matter of staying out of trouble and trying to get to the end. We got a good car, but you are at the mercy of everyone around you and usually it is a big wreck that you have to deal with, so hopefully we wont have to deal with that this year.”

With Kimmel being a veteran on the ARCA circuit many young drivers approach him for advice. Kimmel said the best thing he can tell drivers about today’s ARCA race is don’t be in a big rush.

“Patience,” Kimmel said. “This is a pretty long race, it is a lot of miles that we put in here. There a lot of things that going to happen like pit stops, you may change tires and you definitely going to have to worry about gas mileage. Most times people get here and think that they have to be in a big rush, you usually have time to get done what you want to get done, so be really patient here.”

Kimmel enters today’s racing looking to keep the points lead. He has a point lead over

“I am having a good year,” Kimmel said. I was fourth at Daytona, fifth at Mobile and sixth at Salem. I had a really good shot at winning at Salem, the car was very good. The car has been very consistent all year and it has been pretty fast. Hopefully, we build on that this week and get going in the other direction.”

Kimmel has some lofty goals that he hopes to accomplish this season.

“We won nine championships and I have always thought 10 is a better number than nine,” Kimmel said. “We hope to get that done. We are currently at 76 wins and the record for ARCA is 79, so I would love to get four more wins and beat that record. So I have a couple more things to do.”
