SYLACAUGA – Families in need of food are about to get 50 pounds of assistance from a partnership of area organizations.

The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, along with Alabama Childhood Food Solutions and The Sanctuary, will be distributing fresh produce, non-perishable food items and bread at a food giveaway May 10.

“We are giving the food away as long as it lasts, no questions asked,” said ACFS Director Jim Jones. “People are hungry, and we are feeding the children, but we see families are in serious situations also.”

Anyone receiving assistance from SNAP, TANF, SSI or meeting certain income guidelines is eligible to receive food. Proof of need is not required.

Distribution will occur in the parking lot of the former Food World on Main Avenue beginning at 10 a.m. Participants will be asked to register and should arrive slightly before the start time.

The food bank is providing 5,000 to 7,000 pounds of food, and each participating family can select up to 50 pounds of food items of their choice, Jones said. The supply should feed around 200 families.

“We will not be handing out bags of pre-sorted food,” Jones said. “It will be set up as sort of a mini grocery store, and people can come through and choose what they need from the food available.”

The Community Food Bank secures surplus food and household items and distributes them through local partnering service agencies. It currently has 200 partners in 12 counties. Food is distributed to nonprofit and religious groups that directly serve those in need through their own programs. ACFS hands out bags of food to hundreds of local students in need every Friday during the school year, and Jones said there will be several food distribution points during the summer months. The Boys and Girls Club will serve food every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon beginning in June, and children can also pick up food at the Collins Senior Center, Drew Court, Harold Brooks Center and Sycamore Baptist Church during that same time frame.
