TALLADEGA – Now that the B.N. Mabra Center is open again, work to launch the Harvest Center Group is once again under way.
According to a release from Executive Director Ann Spell, the Harvest Center Group is “a non-profit, tax exempt organization whose vision is to create opportunities to educate and empower the community.”
The city of Talladega agreed to furnish space at the Mabra Center, and the Talladega County Commission has donated surplus computers. Spell said more computers are coming from private donors and she will pay for some from her pocket, as well.
“We should start having the computers delivered Thursday,” she said. “That’s a top priority for us, because the children all have computers at school, but a lot of them don’t have them at home. They also allow the parents to access their children’s school records and get job applications. And we’ll have classes for seniors who would like to be able to email their grandchildren, but don’t know how.”
The Harvest Center is designed to provide a host of services to residents of the west side of Talladega, including employee training, a community technology center, Call Me Success empowerment classes, empowerment classes for young children, community gardens and healthy eating classes, a Get Moving program, homework assistance and GED training, senior care, community improvement and community business development strategies. The release particularly thanks Talladega City Manager Brian Muenger and Parks and Recreation Director Stacy Jones, as well as Talladega County Commission President Kelvin Cunningham.
The Call Me Success program will likely be the first to launch, and will cover things like how to dress for a job interview, interview etiquette and other issues involved in seeking employment.
“The Harvest Center seeks to become the grassroots development nucleus for the west side and surrounding communities,” the release states.
