ST. CLAIR COUNTY — A one-vehicle accident Tuesday claimed the life of a 39-year-old Pell City woman.

St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell identified the woman as Latanja Cohill Nobles.

Russell said Nobles was a passenger in a 1993 Toyota Camry that was traveling south on U.S. 231, when it crossed the centerline, left the roadway, and struck a tree.

The accident happened about four miles south of Pell City.

Russell pronounced Nobles dead at 1:53 p.m. at the scene. The cause of death was blunt force trauma.

It was not long before family members and friends of Nobles started gathering as close to the scene as law enforcement would allow. Traffic was being detoured, and as Russell told family members the sad truth about their loved one, there were tears, cries, anguish, hugs. And in the midst of it all, family and friends gathered in a circle on U.S. 231 to pray.

Lt. Joshua Herren with the Pell City Police Department said the accident happened at about 1:35 p.m.
