Slack leads TC past Judson, 5-4
TALLADEGA–Talladega College split a doubleheader with Judson College Monday, but it was the exciting 5-4 walk-off win in the second game that will surely stand out for the team, their coaches, and fans.

“We definitely needed this win to keep us going,” head coach C.J. Combs said. “It was what we needed to keep us going into conference. I think that it can only get better from here.”

In the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied at 4-4 and Jessica Thornton at third base, Quiyanna Slack came through with a walk-off single through the middle of the infield to give the team a 5-4 win.

“Quiyanna Slack was one of our key players all day,” Combs said. “In the first game, I moved her around and she did whatever I asked her to do. In the second game, she came in and pitched really well. She hasn’t pitched in a few weeks and she came in and pitched very, very well. There were probably only one or two hits to the outfield all game and she did have the walk-off at the end. I thought she was very disciplined and did very well today. She was a major factor, but I thought we really played as a team.”

Slack earned the win for her pitching performance and had an RBI. Lauren Parker finished the game 3 for 3 with a home run and two doubles. Jessica Thornton scored a run and had two RBIs.

The Lady Tornadoes (7-23) dropped the first game by a final of 7-4.

Jan Thomas went 3 for 4 at the plate, but Combs wants to see the team do better with bringing runners in to score.

“I would like to work on not leaving people on base,” she said. “We left too many people on base today, just getting our timely hits. We just need to stay focused and have confidence all the way through. It’s kind of hard to do when we play all these really tough teams that get us down, but just keeping our confidence up all the time.”

The Lady Tornadoes face a pivotal week ahead, as they face doubleheader games against conference opponents Fisk University on Wednesday and Edward Waters on Friday.
