Yacht, palm tree and Missouri man make it home

PELL CITY – A Missouri man finally made it home safe and sound with his 41-foot yacht and palm tree.

“Everything is really going great here,” said George Morris, 65, at his home in Sikeston, Mo.

Morris was transporting his yacht, the “2nd Hand Lion,” from Talladega to Sikeston when his trailer broke, marooning him in Pell City for about a week.

He was able to repair the trailer, only to have more trailer problems, leaving him high and dry just a little farther down the road in Brompton.

“It took me three weeks and a day, but I finally got home with it,” Morris said. “Oh, yeah, I got here with my palm tree, too.”

Morris said he faced many obstacles after buying the 1965 Hatteras yacht in Talladega, but he was able to overcome the odds to “ship” his yacht back to his recreational vehicle park in Sikeston.

“I was faced with many challenges, problems, but I was able to find ways to resolve them,” he said.

His trip to Alabama and the struggle to tow the yacht to its final resting place, a small pond, was a lot more work than he expected.

“It was more of an adventure than I thought it would be,” Morris said.

But he has no regrets, and it was an experience Morris will remember for the rest of his life.

“I want to thank the people of Alabama,” he said.

Strangers reached out with helping hands as Morris struggled to move his home-away-from-home more than 400 miles north.

“This was probably one of the best things that has happened to me,” he said. “I lost 35 pounds, and I do not have to use my oxygen anymore. It (the trip) probably saved my life.”

He said his yacht will permanently sit in a pond he built and stocked with catfish. The boat will serve as a honeymoon suite for young couples who stay at his RV Park in Sikeston.

And how is his palm tree handling the northern temperature?

“It’s doing good,” he said. “I put some Miracle Grow on it, and I’m watering it with the water from my pond.”
