“I am really proud of Reeves Brasher,” Childersburg head coach Chad Slaten said. “He threw three pitches: changeup, fastball and curve ball. He hit his spots really good and he was in command the whole ball game. I thought Alex Bentley had a really good game, our lead off hitter. He made a great defensive play from center field throwing a batter out at home. He had a couple of hits and scored a couple of runs. I thought we played sound defense. Zach Lightsey made a great play at third base had a double play to end the game, so defensively we were sound. We still swung the bats a little bit better, but you have to give their pitcher credit. He had a good fastball; curve ball and he did a good job. We are glad of the win; we are fortunate to get it. We come out on Wednesday and go at it again.”
The Tigers gave the pitcher run support in the first inning. Alex Bentley and Trevor Bates got on base to open the game. Brasher hit a single to score Bentley to give Childersburg a 1-0 run. Zach Lightsey drove in Bates to increase the Tigers lead to 2-0.
Brasher recorded eight strike outs for the game, which included two in the second inning.
In the bottom half of the second inning, Ryan Garrett hit a shot up the middle, which got past Lincoln’s centerfielder which allowed Will Donahoo to score to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Bentley hit a RBI single up the middle to give Childersburg a 4-0 advantage.
In the bottom half of the sixth, the Lincoln Golden Bears had a chance to get some runs on the board, but a great defensive play ended the threat.
With two runners on, Greg Stephen hit a shot to centerfield. Zay Caldwell hustled down the base pad after the ball fell in front of Bentley. As he made his way down the third baseline, Bentley threw a rocket to home plate to that allowed the catcher to tag Caldwell out at home.
“Well, first of all congratulation to Childersburg,” Lincoln head coach Billy Childers said. “They have a really good baseball team and their kids play hard. They did a good job and they hit the ball very well. Our kids played hard and fought back. It looked bleak there for a while when we were down 3-0. The Pate kid did a great job on the mound and he got better as the game went on. We made a few plays on defense that helped us out. We have to do a better job of getting the ball in play and getting base hits to get more runners on base. We struggled all night at the plate. We have to get that fixed.”
Landon Higginbotham put Lincoln on the board in the seventh inning with a base hit that allowed Colton Pate to score from second base.
Childersburg ended the game with a 6-4-3 double play.
Pate earned the loss for Lincoln.
Bentley led Childersburg with two doubles and an RBI. Lightsey recorded a hit and a RBI. Donahoo recorded a hit, while Garrett recorded a hit and two walks.
