Of Special Note: Young writers honored
In a world of tweets, smartphones and tablet computers, it was refreshing to see that there are still young people around interested in the printed word.

Winners were announced last week in the southern portion of Talladega County in a contest judging the best short stories written by middle school and high school students.

The brainchild of Cabot Barden — a local musician who has authored two fictional books on life as a member of a band, several local businesses got on board as sponsors, and a dozen entries came in. Donna Rentfrow, Shirley Ferguson and Barden served as judges.

Entries showed both imagination, storytelling skills and solid use of languages in developing characters and telling the tales.

We congratulate Zach Tarwater, Jordan Lucas and Lora Roberson as the writers of the top-three stories, and we commend all of the young writers for their works. We hope they all continue to express themselves and develop their ideas. And we commend the organizers and sponsors for making it happen.
