Talladega wins Class 5A Area 8 Championship

The Talladega Tigers defeated Shelby County, 87-82 to win the Class 5A Area 8 championship on Monday.

Talladega jumped out to a 31-10 lead in the first quarter. Talladega senior guard Trey Riggins dished out seven of his game high 12 assists in the opening period.

The Tigers took a 53-29 lead into halftime.

Shelby County fought their way back into the game behind the play of Tyler Madison. The UAB commit scored 25 of his game high 40 points in the second half. Shelby County trailed 66-55 going into the fourth quarter. Talladega made enough plays late to hold off Shelby County.

Talladega once again had a balanced attack. Tournament MVP, Damien Hawkins scored 23 points. Ahmad Gooden scored 20 points. Justin Kelly had 11 points, while Josh Madden chipped in with 10 points.

Talladega will host Ben Russell on Friday at 7 p.m.


The Childersburg Tigers lost to Dallas County, 66-46, in the finals of the area tournament Monday night.

Childersburg trailed by just one point, 17-16 after the first quarter, but were behind 35-27 at intermission.

The visiting Tigers fell further behind in the third quarter, 54-39, and were unable to cut the margin in the final stanza.

Lagaryius Bradley led Childersburg in scoring with 15 points. Keonte Estelle and Sychem Butler both added seven points.

Dallas County’s Jerrod Moorer led all scorers with 18 points. Markell Harris added 17 and Chad Martin finished with 14.

Childersburg and Dallas County both move on to Sub-Regionals. Childersburg will travel to Handley Friday.
