Monday shooting victim identified
CHILDERSBURG – As the investigation into a fatal officer involved shooting in Childersburg continues, very little new information has been made public.

Just after midnight Monday, a Childersburg police officer responded to a call at a Kangaroo station on U.S. 280, where he apparently became involved in a scuffle with the victim.

Community Funeral Home confirmed Wednesday that the victim was Roderick Hamilton, 36. Hamilton had family in Childersburg, but it was not entirely clear if he still lived there.

Hamilton was airlifted to Birmingham, where he died. The officer was transported over land to Coosa Valley Medical Center in Sylacauga.

The name of the officer has not been released.

Talladega County District Attorney Steve Giddens said the case is the subject of an active investigation by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, which is standard procedure in an officer involved shooting. Once their investigation is complete, the case will be submitted to a grand jury for consideration.

Giddens said he spoke with ABI investigators Tuesday and was assured that the investigation was pressing forward.

This is the second officer involved shooting fatality in Childersburg since October 2008. At that time, officer John Luke Benefield shot and killed 18-year-old Tony Martin Jr. Benefield’s case was presented to a Talladega County Grand Jury and was no billed.
