CHILDERSBURG — One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting at a convenience store early Monday.

Shortly after midnight Monday, police were called to the Kangaroo Service Station at 32344 U.S. 280 in Childersburg.

After arriving on the scene, an apparent scuffle ensued between an officer and the driver of a vehicle parked near a gas pump. Shots were apparently fired by the officer.

The driver of the vehicle was flown by LifeSaver helicopter to University Hospital in Birmingham where, according to The Associated Press, the driver died.

The officer was transported by Childersburg Ambulance and Rescue to Coosa Valley Medical Center in Sylacauga. The officer’s condition was not known Monday.

Sgt. Steve Jarrett, a spokesman for the Alabama Department of Public Safety, said the Alabama Bureau of Investigation responded to a request by the Childersburg Police Department to investigate an incident involving an officer.

It is standard procedure for the ABI to investigate shooting incidents involving law enforcement agents.

Jarrett said the incident is under investigation and information will be turned over to Talladega County District Attorney Steve Giddens, who was not available for comment Monday.

No further details were available Monday and the incident remains under investigation.
