TC Central routs Verbena
HOWELL’S COVE – The Talladega County Central Fighting Tigers put together a dominating performance in their 58-6 victory against Verbena on homecoming on Friday.

“It is a homecoming win,” TC Central head coach Damian Dorsey said. “I hate the score is the way it is, but I am proud of the guys for showing 100 percent effort. We finally finished a game.”

The Fighting Tigers scored on their first five possessions of the first half.

On their opening drive of the game, Julius White went 66-yards down the left sideline on a fake punt for a touchdown. Ze’Kyle Stockdale converted the two-point conversion to give TC Central an 8-0 lead.

“That is something that we talked about,” Dorsey said. “If they don’t rush, he can run it, but came and did it one too many times. That is a situation that we have to clean up.”

The Fighting Tigers took over on the Verbena 47 yard line on the ensuing possession after holding them a yard short on a fake punt attempt. Junior fullback Corey Morris went 44 yards straight up the middle of the Red Devils’ defense for a touchdown. Kylan Cross converted the two-point conversion to give TC a 16-0 advantage.

The Fighting Tigers went to the air on their first play of the second quarter. White found Cedadrick Garrett down the left side line for a 57-yard touchdown. Stockdale converted the two-point conversion to increase their lead to 24-0.

Verbena gave the football back to the Fighting Tigers on their next possession. The Red Devils fumbled the option pitch. The football bounced into the hands of senior Ramone Russell who took it in from 40-yards out for a touchdown.

TC Central put together their most impressive drive of the night on their next drive. The Fighting Tigers went 72-yards on four plays for a touchdown. The key play of the drive was a 30-yard run by Cross to the Verbena 28 yard line. Justin Woodruff gave the Fighting Tigers first and goal at the 10 on an 18-yard run. White found Stockdale for a 10-yard touchdown on the next play to make it 36-0.

White threw his third touchdown of the game right before halftime. The freshman found his favorite receiver Stockdale for a 30-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown to give the Fighting Tigers a 42-0 lead at the half.

The Red Devils got on the board late in the third quarter to cut the TC Central lead down to 42-6.

“We gave up that six,” Dorsey said. “They didn’t want to let them score, but they gave them the score. They earned it. Coach Harris is a great coach. He has been doing this for 30 something years, so I have much respect for him.”

The Fighting Tigers continued to pour it on the Red Devils. White found senior Julius Player for a 20-yard touchdown to make it 50-6.

Russell scored the final touchdown of the night from 37-yards out to increase TC Central’s lead to 58-6.

With the win, the Fighting Tigers improve to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the Class 1A, Region 4 play. TC Central travels to take on county/region rival Fayetteville next Friday.

“We have to put this win to bed,” Dorsey said. “We are going to come back and watch it on Sunday to make sure the kids know the season is not over and that we still have a chance.
