TC Central wins thriller against Winterboro, 28-24

ALPINE — The Talladega County Central Fighting Tigers overcame a fourth quarter deficit to defeat Winterboro 28-24 on Friday night. The win also marked the first win for TC Central head coach Damian Dorsey.

“All the glory goes to God,” Dorsey said. “After that the glory goes to the kids. I am so proud of a bunch of kids you wouldn’t understand. Those kids never gave up. They believed in each other. I told them God is for real and this is for real.”

The Fighting Tigers battled back from a 10- point deficit in the fourth quarter.

TC Central (1-2,1-1) were able to cut the Winterboro lead down to 16-14 with 8:50 left in the fourth. The Fighting Tigers started the drive on their 14 yard line after a Ramone Russell interception. The key play of the drive was 38 yard run by Russell to midfield. A 5-yard face mask penalty gave TC Central the football at the Winterboro 45 yard line. Rodney Wilson gave the Fighting Tigers the ball at the 14 yard line after 12 –yard rumble. Justin Woodruff capped of the drive a few plays later with a 3-yard touchdown. Corey White converted the two-point conversion to cut the Bulldogs lead to 16-14.

The Bulldogs (1-2,1-1) responded with a big play on their next possession. Winterboro started their drive from the 15 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage the Winterboro center snapped the ball over Taylor Garrett’s head and to the Winterboro goal line. Garrett picked up the football and found Jaylen Ashley streaking down the field for a touchdown.

Woodruff was injured on the play for the Fighting Tigers. The sophomore had to be put on a stretcher and carted off the field.

After the 10 minute delay, the Bulldogs converted a 2–point conversion to make it 22-14.

Corey Morris led the Fighting Tigers down the field on their next possession. On the first play of the drive the junior went around left end for a 52 -yard run to the Winterboro 28 yard line. A few plays later Morris went around right end for a 15 -yard gain to set up first and goal. White scored from 9-yards out. White converted the 2 point conversion to pull the Fighting Tigers within two points 24-22 with 5:34 left.

Ashley’s returning the ensuing kick off to the TC Central 32 yard line. Bad snaps and penalties plagued the Bulldogs on their next possession. On fourth and 40, the Bulldogs punted the football to Russell who took off the left side line for a 50 yard return to the Winterboro 25 yard line with 2:38 left in the game. On third and six from the 21, White went around right end for a 20 –yard run down to the Winterboro 1 yard line.

The Bulldogs defense made two goal line stances which forced TC Central to call a time out with 15 second left in the game.

White scored on a quarterback sneak on the next play to put TC Central ahead 28-24 with eight seconds left in the game.

“ I had to get into the end zone,” White said. “I knew when I got the QB sneak that was the win right there.”

On the ensuing kick off Duncan return the football all the way down to the TC Central 15 yard line before Tyler Cross made the game saving tackle.

“ I give then all the credit,” Nurnberg said. “They earned it and they wanted it more than we did.

The first quarter was a defensive battle and ended scoreless.

Winterboro was able to get on the board to start the second quarter. White’s pass over the middle was picked off Cedric McKenzie and returned 11-yards to the TC Central 34 yard line.

The Bulldogs capped off the drive a few plays later with 18-yard touchdown run by Cardri Duncan. The 2-point conversion was good to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead with 11:49 left in the second quarter.

The Fighting Tigers defense made several big hits and big stops in the first half. TC Central came up with a four down stand at the Winterboro 15 yard line. After being backed up 5-yards, Woodruff got the Fighting Tigers offense going. The sophomore running back had runs of 11, 2, 10 and 44 yards to give the Fighting Tigers the football at the Winterboro 28. Corey Morris capped off the drive a few plays later as he bulldozed his way into the end zone from 14-yards out to cut the Bulldogs lead down to 8-6 with 4:27 left before halftime.

Duncan took the ensuing kick off 85 yards down the left sideline for a Winterboro touchdown. The 2-point conversion was good to make it 16-6.

Winterboro plays at St. Jude next Friday, while TC hosts Wadley.
