HOWELL’S COVE- The Talladega County Central Lady Fighting Tigers defeated Munford (25-20, 27-25) Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, TC Central improves to 2-0 on the season. The Lady Fighting Tigers defeated Vincent Monday in their season opener.

“It is always nice when you beat a caliber team such as Munford,” TC Central head coach Leiah Watts said.

Savona Garrett got the Tigers going with her serve. The team scored 10 straight points off the serve of the freshman. Garrett recorded five aces including one that gave TC an 11-3 lead. A net serve gave the Lady Lions the ball trailing 12-4.

“Savona is amazing,” Watts said. “I don’t know where we would be without her.”

The Lady Lions furiously fought back behind the service game of Kelley Foster. Munford scored four straight points off her serve to cut the TC Central lead down to 21-19.

“We were kind of rough in the beginning, but I was more proud of them at the end,” Munford first-year coach Stacey Dotson said. “They really began to fight, and that is something that we always try to work on especially towards the end of the game.”

The Lady Fighting Tigers recorded six aces in the first game, which pleased their coach.

“I am proud of them,” Watts said. ”They are taking it one game at a time.”

Munford jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second game. TC Central scored three straight points to tie the game up at 4-4. A kill by TC Central’s Brittany Sillmon tied the game up at 5-5.

Munford went on a 7-2 run to take a 17-12 advantage. The Lions received four points off the serve of Jessica Blankenship.

The Lady Lions went on to score the next three of four points to make it 21-18.

TC Central responded with a 4-0 run that was capped off by a kill by Garrett to tie the game up at 22-22. The teams went back–and-forth for the next few points.

With the score tied at 25 a piece, Munford’s TeAsia Cunningham hit sailed out of bounds to give TC Central a 26-25 advantage. Garrett ended the match with an ace.

“They definitely stepped up from the summer match,” Dotson said. “We played them in the summer, and we beat them in two games. It is reverse now and they beat us in two games. They stepped it up and I commend them for that. Our girls have improved a lot. I can’t way to practice their skills and get that communication going. We will bounce back from this.”
