Bronze, Silver and Gold
While some of the world’s top athletes will be getting plenty of attention in London when this year’s summer Olympic games get started, a number of young men and women from our area have made their mark in recent weeks in Alabama Sports Festival competition.

Zeke Gossett of St. Clair County won the bass fishing event for the third straight year.

Shelbi White of Lincoln won silver in two events, the 100 meter and 200 meter dash, and she plans to compete in Junior Olympics events in Houston later this summer.

Luke Owings of Sylacauga and Byron Manley of Childersburg both won gold medals in BMX racing for their age divisions, and Jacob and Hunter Boatright of Sylacauga won gold and silver in the 20 and under Bowling competition.

And Cheryl Carr of Talladega got the bronze in Bowhunting for 13 and older females.

Team sports are great and they get a lot of attention, but these winners excelled in events where the focus is on the individual, and their performances this summer put them at the top of the heap at the 30th annual sports festival.

We congratulate them all and wish them well in reaching future goals.
