Dillon, the grandson of legendary NASCAR owner Richard Childress, was behind Kimmel at for most of the final lap. At nearly the last second, he shot to the high side to slip past Kimmel.
“Coming down the last lap, I did know what lap it was,” Dillon said. “We had so oil on the windshield it was either the 25 or the 44 blowing out a lot of oil. I asked halfway down the back of the lap and they said ‘It was the last one. It’s time to go.I got up at the right time and it worked out perfect. I am so happy for my guys.”
Dillon is off to a great start in his young ARCA career. The 19-year old has three wins in five races in the ARCA Series. This was the 12th time a Richard Childress car has seen victory lane here at Talladega. Dale Earnhardt won nine races at Talladega. Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer won a race here last season.
“I thought he had a great win, Childress said. “He really ran a smart race,” Childress said. “He really studies racing hard and I am really proud of him for all the effort he has put into it. You can have a good car, but you have to know what to do with it. He puts in a lot of work and effort into it. Somebody asked me what I thought of that last lap and I said it look like an Earnhardt move on that last lap at the right time. Kind of looked like what Clint, Kevin, and the guys have done. He has watched so much racing.”
Frank Kimmel, driver of the 44 Ansell/Menards Ford car was close to earning his first win at Talladega Superspeedway since 2006 coming around the tri-oval he block Dillon’s move to the inside, but was able to sling shot ahead for the win.
“It really sucks,” Kimmel said. “I am just disappointed. You lead through the tri-oval here; you want to beat them back to the line. Ty did a great job and had a good run. I blocked all the way through the tri-oval and I probably should have blocked all the way through the start finish line. I just got beat unfortunately and it is very disappointing.”
Kimmel has three second place finishes in 19 races at Talladega Superspeedway.
“You know if you let them to the bottom that they are going to beat you to the line here,” Kimmel said. “I was kind of extra protective of that coming off four. I seen him moving around back there and (Bobby) Gehart was up there too, so I thought if they got side by side that could help me and I would have the momentum on the bottom. I still kind of protect of the bottom and I couldn’t see far over to the left. I didn’t know how far if anyone else was coming. You kind of like a sitting duck in a deal like that, but it is just frustrating. We had a great car, it drafted really well all day.”
Gerhart, the driver of the No. 5 Lucas Oil Chevrolet, finished third. Gehart was looking to surging on the outside as he was looking for his second superspeedway victory of the season.
Brett Hudson, the driver of the No. 94 Hudson Performance Driveline Dodge, finished fourth. Chris Buescher finished fifth, Tom Hussert finished sixth, Brian Rose came in seventh, Scott Lagasse Jr. finished eighth, Will Vaught and Matt Merrell rounded out the top 10.
Alabama native Grant Enfinger took the lead on Lap 82 and he retained the lead with laps to go. He lost his drafting partner Brandon McReynolds when he ran out of gas. Enfinger finished 13th.
