SYLACAUGA – A previous assault was upgraded to homicide Monday upon the death of the victim at a Birmingham hospital.

Oliver Onario Jennings, 32, of Sylacauga was shot July 8 on the 900 block of Goodwater Highway by an unknown person, according to a police press release. Sylacauga police responded to the scene at 10:11 p.m. Following the shooting, Jennings was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he received care until he died Aug. 5.

Chief Investigator Willis Whatley said the cause of death is pending an autopsy; however, the incident, formerly treated as first-degree assault, will now be investigated as a homicide. Police are working in cooperation with the Talladega County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force.

“We are looking for a person for murder just like we looked for them for an assault,” Whatley said. “We don’t have any leads yet, but we are developing some.”

No further details were publicly available Tuesday, as the investigation is ongoing, Whatley said.

The last homicide in Sylacauga occurred in Dec. 29, 2012, when 67-year-old Ray Fednanders was stabbed in his Morris Avenue home and died shortly after. Cedric White, 36, of Sylacauga was charged in the murder.

Information about a crime can be reported to Sylacauga Police Investigations at 256-401-2464 or report anonymously at 256-249-4716.
