PELL CITY - Pell City soccer player Will Curran’s dream came true on Wednesday when he signed his letter of intent to play for Delta State University’s soccer team.

“I am excited about signing with Delta State,” Curran said. I love their program and their coaches are awesome. They are very strict, very structured. I have a good program to go to. I feel accomplished being one of the first players from this school to go there.”

For Curran, he fell in love with the Delta State soccer program last summer when he attended a camp on their campus in Cleveland, Miss.

“I went to a camp over the summer,” Curran said. ”When I went to the camp I met the coaches, some of the players that went there and some recruits that are going. As soon as I got there I fell in love with the program. It’s very structured, very organized and it is just a fun program to be with.”

Not having to burden his family with tuition is also something that Curran was excited about when he signed with Delta State.

“When I got this scholarship I was excited,” Curran said. ”To know that my full out of state tuition got paid, so on that note it just makes it easier for me and my family.

“Actually to go play in college is my biggest dream. It has been my biggest dream since I was 12 years old. Now that I get a chance to do it, it makes me feel all good inside.”

Signing to play before the season starts doesn’t take the pressure off of Curran. This season he is working towards earning playing time.

“A little bit, but not a lot,” Curran said. “There is still a lot pressure going there because I have to try to earn a spot now.”

Pell City head soccer coach Florin Radu believes that his center back has all the intangibles, which makes him a good player.

“What can I say about Will,” Radu said. ”He has good anticipation skills; everybody trusts him when he is playing defense and because of that he makes a real good soccer player.”

Curran was one of the players that always showed up for the Panthers last season. Radu said Curran could bring a lot to the Delta State program next fall.

“They are getting a consistent player,” Radu said. “He is very talented and at the same time he is a hard worker and he is a leader. He is a team captain here. I think those are a few qualities that will benefit (Delta State).”
