Water Balloon Battle in Oak Grove

A hot, muggy afternoon provided the right setting for a water balloon battle in Oak Grove Sunday as a hundred or more combatants let loose over 5,000 water balloons in a frenzy of soaking and laughter.

Firefighters from County Line, Oak Grove, and Stewartville volunteer fire departments were joined by groups and other individuals as they squared off unleashing the volley of water balloons as another hundred spectators witnessed the wet and joyous event.

They engaged in battle in an effort to make Talia Joy Castellano’s wish come true. The 13-year old Floridian is stricken with two types of aggressive forms of cancer and listed seeing the water battle as an event on her bucket list.

Talia has been featured on Youtube videos displaying her makeup applications and gained further attention appearing on Ellen Degeneres show who announced CoverGirl makeup made Talia an honorary CoverGirl.

The Family Worship Center traveled from Alexander City with at least 25 who joined in the battle royal. Pastor Tony Harris said members of his congregation wanted to support the young lady.

County Line Chief Hugo Black said he had at least eight to 10 from his department participating, including his family.

“We just wanted to help and wanted to get our family involved in helping her (Talia) dreams come true,” Black said.

Event coordinator Brenda Gann said the event was videoed and will be sent to Talia because she was too ill to attend the event in person.
