Although no one was injured, it was a near miss for a cab driver who happened to be parked nearby.
Chris Powell, a driver with Deluxe Taxi of Sylacauga, said he “looked in my rearview mirror and saw that box car coming at me. I just punched the gas and got out of the way.”
He added, “I work with these guys every day, so I’m always looking. I was just sitting there at the light when it happened.”
The cab had one of its taillights broken out, but otherwise was undamaged, and Powell was unscathed.
The four or five train cars appeared to be carrying marble dust and limestone slurry from Sylacauga. According to Talladega Police Chief Alan Watson, there were no hazardous materials aboard any of the cars.
Cranes were on site to begin removing the derailed cars Tuesday night, and the roadway should be clear by this morning.
