SYLACAUGA – A Coosa County man suffered fatal injuries in an accident on U.S. 280 Tuesday morning.

William David Franklin, 75, of Stewartville was pronounced dead at the scene by Talladega County Coroner Shaddix Murphy at 7:50 a.m.

The incident occurred when Franklin’s gold Honda Accord collided with a Dykes Towing truck at the intersection of U.S. 280 and Coosa Street near Hardee’s, according to Sylacauga Police Capt. Kelley Johnson. The tow truck, driven by Brooks Johnson, 36, of Smiths Station, was apparently traveling westbound on the highway when it struck the driver’s side of the Honda as it was pulling into the intersection.

The wrecker, which was hauling a FedEx truck, came to rest in the median after pushing the car about 150 feet down the highway.

The truck driver reported no injuries, but was taken to Coosa Valley Medical Center for non-medical reasons, Kelley Johnson said.

Franklin’s family was notified by Sylacauga Police and Coosa County Sheriff’s Department personnel. The accident remains under investigation.
