I understand your frustration about the increase in the subscription price of the paper, however, there are a few issues here that are factually incorrect and need to be clarified.

The online digital edition of the newspaper is a digital duplication of our print product— plus it has translation software, readers for the visually impaired, large-print editons, etc. That carries a subscription price because we cannot afford to give away our product for free. However, it costs significantly less than the print edition to reflect the absence of costs of newsprint and printing.

It is not the same thing as the Daily Home Web site, which contains top stories, editorials, obituaries and interactive content and multimedia videos and slide shows. That site and all of its content are free and will remain so.

While we don’t have as much overhead with online products, nothing in this world is free — even the Internet. Most of the major media sites you mention — non of which are paying people to cover local meetings and other news in Talladega and St. Clair counties — are supported by advertising or their broadcast business models. To make money from Google ads, for instance, you need hundreds of thousand of hits a day. The entire population of Talladega County is under 90,000. We have to pay staff to do the reporting, post the copy and manage the site. We also have to pay for Web hosting — a newspaper site generates a lot more traffic than a personal site — and services like the digital edition also cost money.

You are also wrong about how we publish content online — it is not just rerouted from the printer and automatically put online. It has to be reformated and entered, each story, into our online content management system (that software and service also cost money). The digital edition has to be converted, one page at a time, into a format that the digital reader can understand. All of which takes work — some of it quite a lot.

We provide our videos and slideshows free to the public, and they take hours to record, edit and produce. We have been online since 1998, and the digital edition is the latest online product we offer. We have done all of this without adding staff to cut down on expenses so we can provide as much online content as possible for free.

I assure you, the new digital edition credit card system is secure. If you would like, you can call me at my office with the information and I will manually set up the account for the digital edition for you.

As for paying for the rest of the site, the new Daily Home site will contain all the free news the current site does. The Digital Edition is a separate product and is an online reproduction of our print edition. It comes complete with things like audio readers, translators, large print format, and more and is premium content. Like our print edition, it carries a subscription.

But, the old Daily Home online content will still be free on the new site.

I just wish I could sign up for it.  I have contacted The Daily Home twice about the fact I would love to pay for the digital edition… except the site is not secure.  It does not exhibit the characteristics of a secure site, i.e. The “https” designation at the top and the gold lock at the bottom.

There was no response to my first email. 

There was a response to my second one.  I was assured it is a secure site and there have been no problems with it.  

Sorry, I cannot transmit my credit card information over a site which is clearly NOT secure.

I would love to pay by another method, but none is offered.

I subscribed to print edition for a while, but it arived about 10 days after publication, so it was really old news when I received it.

I for one Will not be paying...

The site looks good so far – but I for onw will not pay for online news – especially a small town paper.  There are far to many other news sources and newspapers online that is free.  in these tough times – money is tight for so many.  I believe for a small news source such as this to charge it’s subscribers could hurt you in the long run.  You need to figure out how to pay for your online content through advertisers.  I read several online newspapers and participate in online forums and coments on each… but I will not pay no matter how small the amount.  If everyone wnated to charge for all online content the internet would soon fail.

So far, so good! Your new site is taking shape and the appearance is logical and appealing to the eye. The pages loaded quickly and page layouts are easily navigated.
I see and read many blogs that contain a lot of negative comments about “pay-for-news” and tend to believe subscription-access will be a failure! As retired senior citizens living on fixed income, paying for news is not an option.
Hopefully you can develop a plan that allows free access paid for by your advertisers.
